NYC/CCC&St. L - New York Central/Big Four, CIND Subdivision - Indiana & Ohio, CIND Subdivision
0032_BigFour-1
Remains of the 5th Street bridge over the Cincinnati & Whitewater Canal, and later the Big Four, looking east towards downtown. When the Indianapolis & Cincinnati built their line into downtown, they bought out the defunct Cincinnati & Whitewater Canal's property along the Ohio River. This gave the railroad a clear right-of-way to the canal's former downtown terminal at Pearl and Plum Streets, now the western entrance to the riverfront transit center under 2nd Street. That station was replaced by Central Union Depot. The B&O lines heading west along the river, and coming down the Mill Creek valley also used this stretch of tracks to reach the downtown station, as the CCC & St. L line to Columbus operated via trackage rights over the B&O south of Ivorydale. The limestone used in this stone wall is consistent with the stone used in canal locks and aqueducts, but the canal was only four feet deep, so the railroad either had to dig down under crossing streets, or raise up the grade on either side, or both, to allow railroad cars to pass. So this could be a mix of original, recycled, and new (as of the 1860s) stone.
