In 1849, Harrison Diehl moved his fireworks factory to Mt. Adams. He established a park called "Pyrotechnic Gardens," commonly called "Pyro" where he would set off huge fireworks displays that could be seen for miles around. Visitors to the park could climb up the stairs of the wooden tower and watch the fireworks from the platform at the top. Several disastrous explosions led to closing the park, and the factory was moved to Reading.
